| I am enjoying my work here. As my friends or family members, you may know that I can be pretty intense about whatever I put my heart into. The good thing about this, on the receiving end, is that my work is 110% passion and dedication. Africa has a way of daily reminding me – some days hourly – that I am not in control. Before coming here, I didn’t see that I needed this lesson so badly. Some days it’s difficult to wake up having no idea what’s gong to happen and staying open to what needs or people come about. If I have an agenda, I’m only disappointed. If I stay open, I find I’m surprised and delighted. Also, I am used to my work or a project looking like: plan, make a to-do list, complete list = tangible outcome achieved. Or, alike to working seven years in corporate America, I’m used to it looking like: go to somewhere other than home, do what others tell me to do, tell who told me to do it that it’s done, go back home. Success and productivity are not as tangible here. Also, there is no one to tell me that what I do is right or wrong, good or bad. Because of this, I am learning how to trust more in myself. I am able to relax knowing that I feel good about what was accomplished, even when unnoticed or unacknowledged. We all have the right to enjoy our work. Our work makes up our days, our days make up our lives. Do what you love and you’ll love what you do. |
